Three years ago, the club hockey scene at Fairfield University looked very different from what it does now. Only one team represented the program, with limited roster spots. Opportunities for new students were sometimes scarce, with difficult cuts being a yearly occurrence. Now, there is almost a whole different program. The addition of a second club hockey team has not only expanded the program but transformed it into something much bigger.
What started as a one-team structure has now become two teams that provide more opportunity for players to continue competing at a high level, while also strengthening the overall hockey community on campus. For many students, especially first-years, this change has made all the difference.
“Having a second team gives more guys a chance to keep playing the sport they love,” said senior captain Lucas Chaconas. “A lot of people come to Fairfield thinking their hockey careers might be over. Now they don’t have to be.”
That opportunity is one of the biggest benefits of this expansion. Instead of players being discouraged from trying out because of cuts, there is now a bigger opportunity for students who want to continue their careers. This impact goes beyond just numbers.
The second team has played a major role in helping first-years adjust to college life. Transitioning into college can be challenging for a lot of students, but joining a team creates an instant support system. Teammates become friends, and the locker room becomes a space where first-year students can feel comfortable and connected.
“It helps freshmen build relationships right away,” said senior Nicholas Cocca. “You come into school and immediately have a group of guys who have your back. That’s huge.”
This sense of community has become one of the defining features of the program. While the two teams compete separately, they remain closely connected, sharing a common identity as Fairfield hockey players. The expansion has strengthened the culture at the school.
The most impressive thing is how quickly the second team found success. In just its third year, the team captured the Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference Division III regional championship — something few could have predicted when the team first started. The win not only validated the expansion but showcased the depth of talent within the program.
This success reflects the program’s fast growth and the commitment of its players. Student athletes can continue developing their skills while contributing to a competitive environment that benefits both teams, and it has helped elevate the reputation of Fairfield’s hockey program. What started as an effort to create more opportunity has turned into a wave of pride. This program is now about building something strong, competitive, and lasting — and the future appears bright.
With two strong teams, fast-growing rosters, and a culture centered around competition and community, the Fairfield club hockey program will continue to thrive. This expansion has proved that giving more students a chance to play doesn’t dilute success — it grows it.
The story of Fairfield’s club hockey program is more than just adding another team. It is much deeper than that for everyone involved. More players get to keep playing the game they love, more friendships are formed, and there is more success to follow. What began as a simple addition has now grown the program bigger than anyone could have imagined.
