Development has been the central theme of this year’s Fairfield University men’s basketball team, and it was on full display tonight in Fairfield’s 72-58 triumph over Siena University.
The Stags have worked their way to a record of 7-1 for rematches this season, moving to 19-11 overall and 11-8 in the MAAC amid a three-game win streak. Heading into tonight, the emphasis was on locking down the Siena offense, according to head coach Chris Casey.
“It started with a defensive mindset and us doing what we’re supposed to do defensively,” Casey said. “It’s not a revenge factor, it’s us trying to get better at certain things on both ends of the floor.”
Holding Siena’s MAAC-leading offense to a season-low 58 points with just .355 shooting and .174 from behind the arc, the Stags shut things down with the trio of first-year Declan Wucherpfennig, sophomore Isaac Munkadi and senior Braden Sparks each having standout performances, accounting for 30 of Fairfield’s 49 total rebounds.
Wucherpfennig earned his eighth double-double of the season, with 10 points and 17 rebounds in total.
“I think rebounding is something I do best,” Wucherpfennig commented. “I just want to go out there and make sure I rebound my best.”
Munkadi provided a crucial performance for the Stags, getting the start as first-year Brandon Benjamin’s status remains unknown after a recent ankle injury. He opened up each half with a solo run and ultimately finished with 13 points and eight rebounds to his name.
“He was fantastic,” Casey said of Munkadi. “I’m really happy for him because his performance the last two halves has really significantly helped us on both ends of the floor, and it gave us the chance to win.”
Casey emphasized how influential Sparks has been as a leader for the Stags, and how rewarding it feels to have watched them develop over the course of their season, “Credit to him because he sets a tone. One of my favorite things in coaching is watching young men grow and groups grow as [they] get better as basketball players, and grow as people.”
Sparks tallied 19 points and shook the Mahoney Arena with a second-half dagger of a three-pointer to make it 54-33 with 9 minutes left. Sparks’ leadership has been a recurring theme of this team’s story. “I just make sure I lead by example, and be as vocal as I can be in practice and in games,” Sparks added.
As a unit, Fairfield’s bench also proved itself to be ready, led by graduate student Deuce Turner, who accounted for 17 of the bench’s 25 points. “This is why you have a team, because everybody’s got to be ready,” Casey said. “I’m enjoying being around them. I’m fortunate to be around them.”
For their last game at the Mahoney Arena of the 2025-26 season, the Stags will take on Mount St. Mary’s (10-9) on Sunday, with the winner of the match securing a first-round bye for the MAAC Championship tournament. The Stags will be celebrating their seniors that afternoon, with celebrations starting at 1:30 p.m. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at FairfieldStags.com/TIX.
