They say 2026 is the new 2016, so I thought I’d bring back a trend that was at its peak in the mid 2010s: monthly favorites. When YouTube was at its height, creators would make videos about all their favorite things, sharing the best recent movies, shows, music, recipes, purchases, and more. These kinds of videos were popular because they didn’t have to fit into any one category; they were a hodgepodge of hobbies, interests, items, and hyperfixations. In keeping with the old trend, here are a few of my favorite things from the month of March.
Watching: The second season of “The Pitt” was just recently released, which prompted me to start tuning into the riveting medical drama. It hooked me in from episode one; its fast-paced nature makes it one of the only shows that I can watch without getting distracted. If you’re the kind of person who has trouble watching TV without scrolling on your phone, this show is for you. Additionally, it’s been deemed one of the most accurate medical dramas out there, which makes it really cool to watch, especially as someone with nursing majors for roommates.
Listening: I wasn’t always the biggest Olivia Dean fan, but lately her music has been growing on me. My favorite songs of hers at the moment are “Baby Steps” and “Man I Need,” both of which I think are perfect for background music while driving or doing homework.
Reading: My most recent read was “The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry” by Gabrielle Zevin. While I wouldn’t say it was the most riveting book I’ve ever read, I did enjoy the slow-paced plot and loveable characters. The story follows the disgruntled A.J., owner of a bookstore on a little island off the coast of Massachusetts. When a surprising delivery appears inside the store, A.J. finds himself taking on the challenges and joys of fatherhood. What I loved most about this book was the cozy small-town atmosphere. I enjoyed getting to know not only A.J., but also his friends, family, and community.
Doing: My favorite activity that I’ve recently added into my weekly schedule is spin classes in the RecPlex. Being able to choose classes based on themes and playlists makes working out so much more fun, and going with a friend helps motivate me even more. Usually, I would prefer to run to get my cardio in, but spin classes are perfect for cold or rainy days. I’ve grown to love them so much that even when it does start to warm up again, I’ll be keeping them in my routine.
Trying: Although we’re a few months into the year and not really making resolutions anymore, keeping up healthy habits and implementing new ones is always important. It’s easier, in my opinion, to resolve to do something for a month rather than aspiring to it for the entire year. Something I’m working on this month is calling my loved ones at home more frequently. I’m not always good at remembering to call, especially when I get wrapped up in schoolwork or activities. Picking a time when I know I’ll be free to talk and resolving to call at least one friend or family member has been really helpful for staying in touch with the people at home.
I love keeping track of my favorite things each month because not only is it so much fun to have new interests, but it’s also great to be able to look back on things I’ve enjoyed in the past and return to old hobbies. Now that March is finishing up, here’s hoping that April’s favorites will be just as good!
