The Black Student Union at Fairfield University is preparing for a transformative and inspiring event—the Annual BSU gala, taking place on Feb. 22. This event will not only serve as a celebration of Black culture and achievement but also as a powerful reminder of the union’s continued commitment to supporting students, alumni and the wider community.
Senior Blessed Stephen, BSU president, has been at the forefront of leading the group through significant accomplishments. Under her leadership, BSU has grown to over 100 members, creating a vibrant and active presence on campus.
“We’ve worked hard to foster a community that promotes unity and solidarity,” says Stephen. “From our annual events like Rep Ya Flag and the Anniversary gala, to our upcoming ‘Do It 4 Da Culture: Y2K Edition’ celebration, we continue to build life-long traditions for students to look forward to each year.”

The gala is intended to bridge the gap between current students and alumni, fostering a space for continued connection. For current students, the event is an opportunity to reflect on their personal journeys while celebrating their achievements.
“The gala allows us to build connections with peers and feel supported in our academic and social endeavors,” Stephen shares. “It’s about creating an environment where our voices, cultures and accomplishments are not only recognized but celebrated.”
For alumni, the event offers a way to reconnect with the institution that helped shape their experiences. The gala also provides a platform for them to mentor current students, share insights from their careers and inspire the next generation of leaders.
According to Stephen, “the Gala is a chance for alumni to rekindle their roots and give back to the community that helped them grow.”
One of the standout features of the event will be the performances from students and performers from the organization that BSU is honoring and donating to this year—ConnectUs. These live performances will celebrate Black culture, art and music, empowering students to express their experiences.

“Music and art have always been powerful forms of resistance and empowerment in the Black community,” says Stephen. “The performances at the gala will allow students to showcase their talents and celebrate who they are.”
In addition to performances, the gala will feature a keynote address by Erika Brown, Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Fairfield University. Brown, an influential figure in both the academic and athletic community, will speak on leadership, overcoming adversity and strategies for success.
“We are honored to have Coach Brown as a keynote speaker,” Stephen comments. “Her success and dedication to empowering others aligns perfectly with the mission of BSU, and we hope her words will inspire and motivate our attendees.”
To further celebrate the dedication of BSU members, the gala will also include an awards ceremony recognizing students for their contributions to the BSU, academic excellence, leadership and service to the community. These awards serve as a way to acknowledge the hard work and passion that students put into making BSU a welcoming and empowering space for all.
The Gala’s dress code—navy blue, purple, teal, gold and beige—reflects the BSU’s values and identity. Each color represents an aspect of the community and the goals of the BSU.

“Navy blue represents the solid foundation we offer to Black students. Purple speaks to empowerment, helping students recognize their value and potential. Teal reflects balance and well-being, while gold embodies excellence and achievement. Beige emphasizes inclusivity and accessibility, creating a space where every student is valued,” explains Stephen.
For those unable to attend in person, there will be opportunities to support the event virtually.
“We encourage everyone to follow us on Instagram, and if possible, donate to help cover tickets for students who might struggle to attend,” Stephen adds. “Every contribution makes a difference, and part of the funds raised will go toward supporting initiatives like ConnectUs.”
This gala is set to be a night of celebration, connection and empowerment, leaving attendees with a deeper sense of community and a renewed commitment to the goals of BSU. It’s an event where Black students, alumni and allies can come together, reflect on their shared experiences and pave the way for future generations of leaders.
“This event is a testament to the strength, resilience, and excellence of the Black community at Fairfield University,” Stephen concludes. “We are building something that will continue to inspire and empower long after the night ends.”
