On the morning of Jan. 2, Joshua Del Vecchio ‘16 turned himself in to the Fairfield Police Department after he learned of an active warrant for him. He was charged with first-degree sexual assault, first-degree unlawful restraint and third-degree assault, according to a Fairfield Police press release.

In October, an 18-year-old student reported that she had been sexually assaulted in a residential hall. While the incident was originally reported on Oct. 21 by a person not directly involved in the incident, an official complaint was filed by the victim on Oct. 25, according to DPS. This allowed them to proceed with an investigation.

With the cooperation of DPS and Fairfield administration, Fairfield Police gathered witness testimonials and evidence, which led them to Del Vecchio as a suspect. Police also found evidence of electronic communication, which Del Vecchio had used to communicate with other students.

During the two-month investigation, Del Vecchio was questioned but was deceptive in his answers, according to the press release. Forensic evidence was able to refute his account of the incident.

Del Vecchio was also removed from school pending the police investigation.
