A win on Senior Day against Siena, 24-13, did more than just honor the seniors.
It gave Fairfield the MAAC regular season title and the first overall seed in the MAAC tournament, ending an undefeated conference season and tying the MAAC-record for wins. The win is also the Stags’ 16th in a row as their record improved to 16-1 overall and 6-0 in conference.
Over the weekend, the Stags hosted a series of games, defeating Columbia 10-9 on Wednesday, LeMoyne 17-13 on Friday and then Siena on Sunday.
LeMoyne was the MAAC Champion last season before becoming an independent team this year. The Dolphins have a 12-5 record on the season and the win gave Fairfield a victory over a quality team. LeMoyne was most likely the biggest test of the season for the Stags since a season-opening loss to No. 14 Yale by one goal.
Fairfield is led by its high-scoring offense, which is ranked fourth in the nation and freshman Kristen Coleman, who ranks seventh nationally in points with 68. Since the last rankings were released Coleman increased her total to 81 points, to go along with 61 goals, both Fairfield single-season records.
The Stags defense is also ranked fourth in ground balls per game. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Chatnik increased her career win total to 26, the most in University history for a career.
Fairfield will take on fourth-seed Iona during the MAAC Tournament at Iona on Friday afternoon. If the Stags advance, they will face either Marist or Canisius.
