Spring training is underway and the reminiscent feelings of last year’s season are returning to many baseball fans. The preseason of the MLB known as “Spring Training” will last until Opening Day on Thursday, March 27th and will showcase the talents of All-Stars and upcomers alike.

This year, new developments include the Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System. The new technology can track a ball’s placement and determine whether or not a pitch should be declared a strike. The MLB has decided to do a soft launch of the software as it will only be used in spring training and when a challenge is issued to an umpire’s call. Fans of baseball have mixed feelings about the addition since umpires often make startlingly bad calls, but the introduction of a computer also removes the human aspect of officiating that many people find endearing.

Other news includes Juan Soto’s first homerun as a Met during his first at-bat for the orange and blue. Met fans were seen hugging and cheering after their new investment’s achievement; Soto famously signed a 15-year 765 million dollar contract which is the largest in MLB history. The Yankees also spontaneously decided to end their historic ban on facial hair which came as a surprise to many.

On a mournful note, the MLB community is sorrowfully remembering the impact of Larry Dolan, who died on Sunday. Larry had been the owner of the Cleveland Guardians since 2000 which made him the longest-tenured owner in the team’s history. The Fairfield community would best recognize Larry as being the brother of Charles F. Dolan; one of the university’s largest benefactors. Charles F. Dolan predeceased his younger brother by two months, and it is certain that both of the sibling’s indelible achievements will be remembered by their respective New York, and Cleveland communities.
