It’s Friday night (or maybe Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday) and you’re ready to go out. You tighten the belt to ensure your pants won’t come off until you want them to and then head over to the closet to find something to cover the nice beer gut you’ve accumulated over the first semester of college.
Since you attend Fairfield, there is a good chance you are going to wear a Polo. Before you select the perfect shirt for the evening, though, there are many important factors that you must consider.
Step One: The first important decision of the night is the color. Going with a warm hue, such as pink, yellow or maybe a bright aqua will get you noticed. For example, “Wow, look at the kid in the bright Polo” may be whispered around the party.
However, wearing one of these in a place you are unfamiliar with could also lead to some negative comments. For instance, “Wow, look at the kid in the pink shirt, did he turn the lights on before he left the room?”
For situations like this, a cool color may be a better choice. A navy blue, brown or grey shirt would work fine with jeans. While you are less likely to stand out, the cool colors will not render any comments or cause people to formulate first impressions of you based solely upon your shirt.
Step Two: After settling on a color, the real work must begin. One important factor that really impresses people is matching to the logo on the shirt. Whether it is a moose, a seagull or a small man on a horse, matching to the logo makes it look like you put effort into the process of getting dressed.
By selecting a basic colored logo shirt, and possibly turning it inside out to hide the writing on the front, you will not only add another layer for warmth, but make the basic Polo with jeans look more coordinated.
So now for the big question: –What the hell do I do with my collar?
Step Three: A common misconception is that just because a shirt has a collar, it has to be popped.
This is false.
Popping one’s collar has to be done with extreme caution because an erroneously popped collar could single-handedly ruin the look and the night for even the preppiest dresser.
When wearing a warm color, the collar shouldn’t be popped. This draws to much attention to the shirt and makes you look pretty dumb. A popped collar on a warm shirt is just asking to be made fun of. If you don’t believe me, try it and notice the reactions you get.
If a cool colored shirt is chosen, popping the collar would be a move that has the potential to extend the night, and possibly make it better. A dark blue works nicely with the popped collar and makes a clear statement about your personality. It also shows self confidence which really impresses fellow party-goers, especially the woman folk.
So popped or un-popped, warm or cool, use discretion when picking your shirt. Remember, chicks dig the Polo.
