Senior Mug Night is often equated with an endless flow of $1 drafts. Of course, I had my dollar bills ready to get all the drinks I could possibly consume during the evening. After all, it was the perfect opportunity for a party: Tuesday night with no classes on Wednesday. It’s great to be a senior.
I was excited as I walked up to the front door of the Levee. Though I did not get a mug as I entered the door, despite my assumptions that a mug night would include a mug, I was very excited to enter the Levee when there were more than three people at the bar.
FUSA president Jess DiBuono greeted me at the door, excited by the attendance.
“This is amazing; it’s a great turnout by the senior class,” she said. “I hope everyone has fun.”
There is no reason why the Levee should not hold more events like this. The turnout was way more than I had expected. For the first time in my college career, all of my friends gathered together on campus having a great time.
The class council even set up shuttle buses running from the beach to the Levee to transport beach residents over to the party safely and back at the end of the night. This worked out great, with over 70 kids bussed in from the beach, according to Steve Luttge, assistant director of student activities.
Although I was more than enthusiastic about Mug Night, others had mixed reactions.
“I don’t think they fully thought it through. They could have been more organized,” said Matthew Conway ’06. “There was a swarm of people around the bar, to the point where it took 15 minutes to get to the bar.”
This was well worth the wait, however, since I only had to pay $2 for two beers. At the Grape, I often wait 15 minutes to pay at least 4 bucks for two beers. I only wish that the Levee would have more events like this every week to attract more of the senior beach crowd and to lessen the strain on my wallet.
Lindsey Hueber ’06 agreed and said that she “would definitely come on Friday nights if the Levee had more events like this.”
The night was an extraordinary experience, and something I wish I could attend every week.
Nevertheless, the unexpected occurred and the taps ran dry, forcing the night to come to a relatively early close. I look forward to next time, where maybe I’ll actually get a mug.
