Students in the Fairfield nursing program will take their passion for helping others to the international arena when they travel to Nicaragua this spring break.

The “Nurses in Nicaragua” fundraiser at The Field in Bridgeport last Thursday night was the nursing students’ initiative to help earn money for their week-long service trip in March. The Field, which has hosted several Fairfield events including the 99 Nights Celebration for seniors, served as the venue of choice for Fairfield students.

Christine Steverman ’11, one of the organizers for this fundraiser, explained that those who are traveling to Nicaragua will be working with a small community outside of Managua to help improve their health by conducting screenings and health fairs and helping with other minor medical issues.

The fundraiser at The Field was a fusion of fun and entertainment with the goal of raising money for these travelers. Samantha Ceglia ‘11 said, “It was great supporting these nursing students for their trip. I have so many friends in the nursing school, and seeing the commitment they make to getting up early several mornings a week and working long hours for clinicals, I know they’ll do a great job in Nicaragua.”

There was a five dollar cover charge at the door of the event, and all proceeds went directly to the cost of travel for these students. The nursing students in charge of the event hoped for an attendance of about 200 people and were quite successful. According to Steverman, the nurses raised $950 that will go toward the seven undergraduates’ and two second degree nursing students’ travel fees to Nicaragua.

From 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. there were food specials offered, and there were drink specials offered from 9:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Throughout the duration of the event, guests had the opportunity to hear DJs Lou and JD.

“It was a lot of fun and there was a great turn out,” said Meg Young ‘11. “They really did a great job organizing it.”

Steverman said, “This was a great opportunity for the Fairfield community to come out and support a really great cause. I know I speak on behalf of everyone going that we all really appreciated everyone’s help.”
