We all remember the classic children’s books we used to read with our parents before bedtime. Our moms would finish ‘The Runaway Bunny’ and before the back cover closed, we would be handing her ‘Goodnight Moon,’ begging her for one more book before the lights were turned off.

Many young kids would consider reading ‘Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs’ a privilege. That’s why the Inter-Residential Housing Association (IRHA) is sponsoring a Children’s Book Drive from Oct. 14 through Nov. 19.

Students can donate children’s books, chapter books, coloring books and puzzles to benefit The Children’s Study Home, an organization devoted to providing new or gently used books and toys for less fortunate children.

Sara Hoegen ’12 and the Dolan Hall Residential Community Council (RCC) President explained that Hoegen is a member of North East Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (NEACURH).She and other representatives of IRHA will be bringing all of the donated items to a NEACURH conference, where they will then distribute all of the puzzles and books to The Children’s Study Home.

First year students that donate at least five items will receive First Year Experience (FYE) credit and fulfill the community service component of the requirement.
So freshman, don’t forget to swipe your StagCard when you drop off your items at the Barone Campus Center Info Desk.’ ‘ ‘ ‘We [also] hope that upperclassmen choose to support this great cause for the sheer benefit of helping those who are less fortunate,’ said Hoegen.

So, if you’re lucky enough to have your car on campus, pick up a coloring book or two next time you pass CVS on your daily Dunkin’ Donuts run.

And for all you freshman, tell your parents to rummage through those boxes in the attic, pack up a couple of your old books and send them over (along with homemade cookies) in a care package. ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘

After all, we all know it’s fantastic getting one of those little white slips in your mailbox.
