The Student Athlete Committee has been running a Thanksgiving food drive for the past two weeks. Fairfield teams wanted a group project for the fall that was practical and not time consuming, because of how busy student athletes are.

The food drive seemed like a valuable cause that easily allowed everyone to be involved. Despite the overwhelmingly generous donations received by Fairfield students, not everyone is thrilled with how the drive has been running.

“We’re not upset. We just thought we should have used our forces together and had better communication,” said Kris Walentik ’04 of Campus Ministry.

Campus Ministry had planned to run a food drive for Thanksgiving but now expects difficulties because the athletes have already started theirs.

“Fairfield students have been incredibly supportive,” said Associate Athletic Director Alison Sexton. “Some teams, like the field hockey and volleyball team, have been more aggressive with the drive than others, but all teams have been working together collectively. Each athlete has been urged to donate money to the drive.”

Fairfield’s athletic teams have already placed donation boxes around different buildings on campus. In dorms, athletes have been going door to door collecting small donations and canned foods. They have hung up fliers around campus as well. Campus Ministry collected donations by going door to door in the dorms, townhouses, apartments and the beach on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

“It’s all for the same cause, so we should have worked with one another, that way we wouldn’t be tapping students multiple times,” said Walentik. “Maybe we’ll try working together next year.”

The Student Athlete Committee plans to drop its donations off at a church in Bridgeport, and Campus Ministry is planning on bringing its donations at Operation Hope, a homeless shelter in Fairfield.
