To the editor:
In response to those individuals who may not feel Communication, not communications, is not a “real” major, the Communication Club would like to challenge that misconception.
Students are drawn to fields of study where they feel they have some inherent knack for the material studied, or see immediate relevance to their lives. Many people for obvious reasons are thus attracted to the study of communication. Communication is the most popular major so it is no surprise that the abilities and amount of work time each student puts in, runs the gamete.
People who have not taken a comm. course should not assume they are easy; ignorance is no excuse for stereotyping. Certainly some classes are more basic than others, as is true in all fields. However, as Communication majors we must achieve at least a B in two prerequisite courses in order to even continue on the major and graduate with this social science degree.
We find it disrespectful and ignorant to treat some areas of study as if they are superior to others. Each makes its own contribution to our understanding of the human condition and the natural world.
