Pork, it’s what’s for dinner! But for Fairfield students, it may also be what’s on television.

Yes, Fairfield’s student television channel does sometimes refer to its studio as a pigsty, and their mascot is an oversized furry pink pig, but the club actually has very little to do with bacon.

The HAM club, which has about 45 active members, helps provide media coverage for a number of events on campus, as well as allowing members to air their own shows. In addition to events such as StagStock in the fall, they are involved throughout the year in live broadcasts such as the recent FUSA election coverage.

During weekday afternoons and late nights, movies are aired for student enjoyment. Monday through Thursday evenings are filled with student-run shows, such as Cutting Room Floor and At the Buzzer. The evening shows run for half an hour to an hour in length.

A typical Tuesday evening in Xavier Hall, the club’s headquarters, is hectic but productive. Aside from the shows that air that evening, the club holds its weekly meetings during which they discuss work that needs to be done and choose who will do what for that night’s show.

They also discuss future trips and events, such as the upcoming trip to the Museum of TV and Radio. Like any close-knit club on campus, the group participates in a number of activities outside their workspace.

Most of the work that goes on in the studio consists of organizing shows, editing – lots of editing- and “searching for missing equipment.” The HAM channel frequently works in conjunction with Fairfield’s radio station, WVOF, to produce events such as StagStock Karaoke at the Levee.

The HAM channel is also a good place to voice your opinion and get free stuff – and who doesn’t like free stuff? Into IT, which airs at 7:30 Tuesday evenings (with Thursday replays) is currently giving away free movie tickets for callers who “name that tune.” The organization was also recently spotted giving away DVDs and movie tickets in the Barone cafeteria.

The HAM club is open to all students on campus, and yes, it is aaaall the way up in Xavier, but according to all the current members, it’ll be worth the walk. If that’s too much, be sure to tune into some of the events it covers. You may even be able to catch the giant pink pig sparring with WVOF’s gorilla mascot.
