Boys Like Girls opened up their first show of their latest tour, Tourzilla, with a strong performance in front of a lively sold-out crowd of 750 people at Toad’s Place in New Haven on Sunday night.

The band delighted the crowd, which consisted of many screaming girls, with a variety of songs from their self-titled debut album, while throwing in a couple of covers.

Boys Like Girls is not just another band out of Boston, mixing its self-proclaimed emo style with a ’90s alternative rock sound that evokes memories of bands such as Eve 6 and Our Lady Peace.

Opening up for Boys Like Girls were We The Kings, The Audition, and All Time Low. But Toad’s did not fill up until Boys Like Girls hit the stage.

Boys Like Girls lived up to the excitement that All Time Low provided for them in opening, kicking off their set with a fast-paced single, “Hero/Heroine,” which excited the crowd right from the start.

They finished the night with the three best songs that they played, starting with a tremendous cover of Frou Frou’s “Let Go,” which is featured on the “Garden State” soundtrack. The band performed the upbeat song perfectly, and the crowd was delighted.

Following “Let Go” was the band’s most popular song, “The Great Escape,” which set the crowd into a frenzy and sounded as good live as it does on the radio.

After an encore break, the band returned to close the night with an impressive acoustic version of “Thunder,” a different style of a song than the rest of the set, which was the perfect way to wind down an energized and thrilling night of music.
