When Mr. Kenney suggested this week’s topic of on-campus vs. off-campus, I realized that I would have to be fair and address both sides of the issue. I will be the first person to admit that beach life is the best housing arrangement at Fairfield, but it’s necessary to acknowledge the past three years spent at 1073 North Benson Road.

Living in the Quad has its perks. Who can honestly say that they have never people watched from their dorm room window or eavesdropped through the cinder block walls? And despite how unappealing communal bathrooms are, I kind of miss reading the Stallstreet Journal. Hooking up within your dorm makes the morning after less stressful, but it can get awkward if you walk into the lounge and see two of your peers going at it.

Parties in the dorms are never a good time because you have to make sure all the alcohol can be hidden in the time it takes an RA to knock three times and state that they are opening the door. Townhouse parties used to be awesome – until public safety made the move to lock the basement doors. You used to be able to fill the basement with people, not care what got spilled on your concrete floor and make it look as if no one was home. Now you have to party-proof the house and spend the whole night praying that He Said doesn’t knock on the door and ruin all your fun.

If you can’t stand being confined to the 200 beautiful acres of FU’s campus, then make sure you apply for off-campus housing. Don’t let the opportunity of living at the beach pass you by. Beach life consists of falling asleep to the sound of waves and waking up to parties on the Point. You are living on the water, in your own house, with all your friends, connected to the rest of your senior class by a few stretches of sand.

What’s not to love? Deciding where to live senior year should be a no-brainer – in the words of Dom Cellitti, ‘home is where the beach is, that’s what me and my girls say’.
