I never watched much baseball after my favorite player, Donny “Baseball” Mattingly, left the sport. I didn’t get back into baseball until freshman year, when I learned how powerful a force your favorite team could be.

I was coming back from Monday night mass my freshman year (sidenote: I recommend that everyone try to attend one before graduation. You’d be surprised how many regulars at the Grape are regulars at mass). On my way back to Jouges, the dorms were yelling and screaming in unison. It was a Red Sox/Yankees playoff game, and I was amazed at the energy in the air. After the game (Yankees won), there were fistfights in the hallways.

There is something about this campus; we’ve got a sizeable population of Massholes and another sizeable population of New Yorkers. I will say outright, they both are some of the most intense people I’ve meet. First, some great quotes from each side:

Massholes: “Basten Gahdens is whicked bettah than Madison Squah Ghadens.” “Yankees Suck.” “Nomah’s way bettah than that prettyboy Jetah.” “Go Celts.” “Larry Bird, Greatest White Man Evah.” “Superbowl, what!”

New Yorker: “Some people look forward to Baseball in September, some people know it’s over for them in August.” “Poor Nomar and his limp wrist.” “Our Bars are open till 4 a.m.” “Just because you’re from Mass and talk funny does not make you from Boston.”

Other things I’ve noticed: Everyone’s accent gets thicker as they get drunk. Some people who I never knew had accents start talking funny. People also constantly flash their “colors.” In class, there’s always kids wearing the blue hats. The question is does it have an NY symbol or a red B?

Is there anything wrong with this though? The sheer intensity one has for ones team or that one has for ones hometown? I think it’s great to take a little pride. Now, when it goes to far, you simply show yourself to be an idiot. Not that there’s anything wrong with that either. There’s plenty of us on campus.

Fortunes… Freshmen: You will see the Red Sox lose for another three years. Sophmores: You will see the Red Sox lose for another two. Juniors: You will see the red Sox lose for another year Seniors: You will see Boston lose for the rest of your life.
