After much anticipation, students flocked to the Levee Friday night for the opening of Mike’s Pizza. Mike’s management was pleased with the turnout.

“It was good,” said Kostas Mentis, one of Mike’s managers. “It was very good.”

No special event was planned around Mike’s opening night, but based on the large number of students who showed up, it seemed like they didn’t need one.

“I thought it was delicious,” said Greg DiCamillo ’05, a beach resident. “I felt that it was the same quality as it is on Post Road.”

A grand opening event is currently being planned, according to Mentis.

“We will have a grand opening in the future,” he said. “We’ll hang signs outside and everything will be free that day.”

Students who came to dine this weekend also played pool, got drinks at the bar, and watched television. Christopher Jak, a pop/folk singer and songwriter from New Jersey, performed at the Levee on Saturday night.

One of the few downsides to getting Mike’s pizza at the Levee is that it isn’t sold by the slice; the minimum pizza order is a small pie for $6.

Mentis said that individual slices are not served because only small and medium pizzas are made at the Levee, as opposed to the large and small pies served in town.

So far, students don’t seem to mind this, and are happy that the franchise has finally come to campus.

“I wish it had been here my entire four years,” said Mentis.

Students have the option of eating in or taking out. Whether or not delivery will be available remains to be seen.

“We’ll see how it goes in the future,” said Mentis.

One potential issue is whether Mike’s on-campus presence will affect the sale of pizza at Rob ‘ Iggy’s in the Stag.

Matt Clinton ’06 said he’ll be less likely to go to the Stag for pizza.

“The Levee is a lot closer and Mike’s Pizza is cheaper and better than at the Stag,” he said.
