When senior Bianca DeAngelo arrived at Fairfield University, she saw that there was something missing. A volunteer and coach for the Special Olympics since junior high, she noticed that there was no similar organization on campus.

In her sophomore year she founded the Fairfield Special Olympics club. The club meets every Monday from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the Mezzanine.

With about 30 people attending meetings on average, the group’s main goal is raising funds for the Special Olympics of Connecticut and increasing awareness on campus.

The club hosts and volunteers at numerous events throughout the year, including hosting a sign language seminar on campus in November, and volunteering and participating in the Penguin Plunge in February.

The Penguin Plunge is an event where volunteers call friends and the community for donations to take a dip in the freezing winter waters of Long Island Sound.

The club has also been operating a bake sale in the BCC this week, which began Tuesday October 25th and will continue to Thursday the 27th. All proceeds from the bake sale go to the Special Olympics of Connecticut.

This weekend the Fairfield Special Olympics club will be heading to the AMF Circle Lanes in East Haven, Connecticut for the Southwest Bowling Qualifier hosted by the Special Olympics of Connecticut.

Special Olympics teams from towns and cities across the Connecticut Southwest will be competing for a chance to represent their hometown in a larger state tournament.

People interested in volunteering for the event can get in touch with the club by emailing  Fairfieldspecialolympicsclub@yahoo.com.
