For many years, the DiMenna-Nyselius library has had a number of films for students to rent out, usually a mix of academic and feature films. Starting this year, the number of films available has risen significantly.

Now that we are all living in the digital age, DiMenna-Nyselius has taken new steps in boosting their collection by purchasing academic On Demand films that students can look up in the library’s catalog or database. Students can then stream these films online ,whether it be for leisure or academic purposes.

With the On Demand films available online, the library now has over 6,000 academic films and has increased their entire film collection by 50% since last year.

“Having films only in the library felt limited. Streaming is the future,” said Reference and Media Librarian Philip Bahr when asked why he made the decision to go digital.

Even with all of the online options made accessible, there are still a large number of films in the library. The collection in the library used to be on the bottom floor, getting little attention and leaving quite a few students unaware of their presence.

This year Bahr made the decision to move the increased film collection to the first floor to remind students of the plethora of films for rent here too.

While some of the timeless classics are still here, the updated collection boasts a wide range of films from features to indies and even documentaries. Bahr wanted to make sure there was an even balance that could appeal to all kinds of students on campus.

DiMenna-Nyselius also hosts a broad range of CD’s that students can take out as well. From classical and jazz to the popular hits of today, there is something for everyone.

All films are available for rent for any student. Students can rent out no more than two movies at a time for up to a week, and up to three CD’s at a time for up to a week. Streaming of On Demand films is unlimited, and it is all free.

So, before signing up for Netflix or buying that DVD at Target, students may want to remember to try the library first or their online database because you might be surprised at what you find.
