Hutch Williams and Dana DeGennaro were elected as president and vice-president, respectively, of the class of 2008 Tuesday night with definitive victories for both.

Also elected were Logan Carr, who ran uncontested for Treasurer, and ten Senators: John Daly, Casey Grier, Marc Hansel, Megan McConville Jessica McLane, Kaity Noone, Chris Pace, Elizabeth Pfeiffer, Eliot Smith and Ben Welch.

Both Williams and DeGennaro, who both listed Fairfield as their first choice college, were eager to begin and very confident about their roles as student leaders for the freshman class and school.

“I am extremely excited and enthused,” said Williams. “I like to give 110 percent. We can do that when I am at the wheel.”

Williams outlined his goals for the class of 2008 in an interview late Tuesday night after learning of his landslide victory over six other candidates.

“I have two goals. The first one is class unity. I noticed, when talking to upperclassmen, that they don’t know everyone in their class. I want to bring everyone together through various activities,” he said. “My second goal is fundraising. Money makes the world go around. These will allow us to do things now and do things later. I want to get a lot of people there.”

“Through the various activities, I want to get 50-60 percent of my class there. I am not exactly sure what we are going to do but if we keep doing different types of social activities, the more people will show up. We just want to get people out there,” he added. “I want to build up Fairfield pride tenfold. We want to make you feel welcome and a part of the Fairfield family.”

Williams decided to run for a student government position partially because of his success and involvement as president of his senior class in high school.

“I decided early on that I wanted to have a top position in freshman government,” he said. “I decided to run for president because I can make a difference with my ideas and the people of my class.”

DeGennaro shared Hutch’s goals and had decided to join Fairfield’s student government to complete the transition from high school to college. She also had experience in student government as vice-president of her class.

“I wanted to become part of FU because it’s my new home,” she said. “In order to make it my new home, I need everyone else to feel the same way, feel like it’s their new home and strive for what they want.”

She wants the defining statement of the class of 2008 to be “the best of what’s around.”

While Williams and DeGennaro have yet to pin down their exact plans for the year, they are full of spirit and energy that they plan to throw into the class of 2008.

“We’re going to turn the whole thing around. The class of 2008 will be remembered, we are going to try new things. We aren’t going to just pass through,” they said.

Their message to their classmates was to “get ready we believe in going big or going home. We have to take our big ideas and take baby steps. Short steps will result in an awesome class. Good things will come to the class of 2008 because 2008 deserves it.”
