Editor’s note: Alison Valdner is on the UP ‘TIL DAWN executive board and was invited to preview the organization’s upcoming event.

St. Jude is a pediatric treatment and research facility in Tennessee. Discoveries made there have changed how the world treats children with cancer and other diseases. On October 11 in the bottom level of the BCC, there will be a letter writing campaign called UP ‘TIL DAWN, to help raise money for the hospital.

The campaign involves individuals coming up with a list of addresses (family, friends, teachers, and what not) and writing requests for donations.

It is just a 30 minute commitment that can help save the lives of children!

St. Jude was founded by Danny Thomas, who made a commitment that no child should ever be denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s inability to pay.

He believed that, “no child should die in the dawn of life.”

St. Jude was the first institution established with sole purpose of conducting research into childhood diseases. There are approximately 4,700 patients from all 50 states and from more than 70 countries. It costs $1 million to operate the hospital daily and most of the operating costs are cover by public contributions.

Currently more than 154 colleges and universities nationwide participate in the program raising more than $10 million for St. Jude.

So please join us on October 11 between 6 and 9 p.m. in the lower level BCC. There will be free food, prizes and a DJ!

Every little bit counts, and with your help thousands of dollars can be raised for research. Spread the word, get your friends involved, and come have fun!
