As The Mirror enters another semester, it will do so with Ben Doody ’07 as Editor in Chief.

Doody, who served last semester as the paper’s Executive Editor, replaces out-going Editor Ryan T. Blair ’07, who withdrew from the University.

Doody’s promotion is one of several changes in the paper’s editorial staff, which added two new Photography Editors, and saw the growth and re-organization of its news and sports staffs.

Lorraine Lampe ’08 and Elyse Raby ’08 will serve as the paper’s Photography Editors, filling the void left by Katie McCarthy ’08, who is studying abroad for the semester.

Lampe was the paper’s Assistant Photography Editor last semester, while Raby, a veteran photographer, studied abroad.

“We couldn’t ask for two more talented people than Lorraine and Elyse to fill one of the most important positions at the paper,” Doody said. “Both are skilled photographers with a wide range of visual talents, and we’re really excited about what they bring to the table.”

Stephanie Lauto ’08, who worked last semester as the Head Copy Editor for the news section, will add “Associate News Editor” to her title, in addition to her responsibilities as Copy Editor.

Joining Lauto as assistants under News Editor Alexandra Stewart ’07 are Andrew Chapin ’09 and Joe Carretta ’10.

Chapin worked last semester as the paper’s full-time Staff Writer, while Carretta wrote several front page stories as a first semester freshman.

“We’ve been fortunate all year to have some of the best people in the college newspaper business working on our news staff,” Doody said. “With the addition of Steph, Andrew and Joe as full-time assistants to Alex, I can’t think of a college paper with a deeper or more talented news staff.”

“Steph is one of the brightest and most talented editors I’ve ever worked with, and it’s incredibly rare to have people who are as young and as good as Andrew and Joe,” Stewart said.

With last semester’s Assistant Sports Editor, Ali Bart, studying abroad for the semester, Sports Editor Dan Akeson ’07 re-shuffled his staff as well.

Akeson will be assisted by Mary Therese Church ’08 and James Thompson ’08, both of whom worked as sports editors on the paper’s web staff.

Tom Cleary ’10 and Chris Simmons ’10 will serve as Online Sports Edior and Assistant Online Sports Editor, the posts being vacated by Church and Thompson, respectively, and Frank Romano ’10 and Keith Connors ’10 will serve as editors for the paper’s newly created and quickly growing sports blog.

“As The Mirror continutes to grow its sports staff, we couldn’t be happier to have Mary Therese, James, Tom, Chris, Frank and Keith in their new roles,” Akeson said. “Between daily news stories and blog posts and expanded print coverage, The Mirror gives readers more sports coverage than almost any other college newspaper in the country, and we couldn’t be happier with the people we have leading the effort.”

In addition to the editorial changes, the paper added veteran newswoman Cindy Simoneau as its advisor for the semester.

Simoneau, a former editor at the Connecticut Post and a professor of journalism at four area universities including Fairfield, will guide the paper while James Simon, the paper’s long-time adviser and the director of the journalism program at Fairfield, is on sabbatical.

“We’re incredibly lucky to have Professor Simoneau aboard,” Doody said. “Whether it’s writing a news story, editing a section, or managing a news room, there isn’t anything in journalism that she hasn’t done.”
