‘The Irish in Film’ returns

For the fourth straight year, the American Studies and Irish Studies departments have teamed up to present ‘The Irish in Film’ series. Consisting of four films shown throughout the fall semester, each film will be shown in the Multimedia Room of the DiMenna-Nyselius Library and introduced by one of the professors in the Irish Studies minor department. The four scheduled films are ‘Angels with Dirty Faces,’ ‘Odd Man Out,’ ‘The Boxer,’ and ‘The Fighting Prince of Donegal.’ The series kicks off on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.

‘A New Reality’

The Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery will be host to ‘A New Reality: Black-and-White Photography in Contemporary Art’ beginning Sept. 19 and lasting until Dec. 7.’ The collection of photos, titled ‘Stirring Images,’ are from Anne and Arthur Goldstein. According to a University press release, curator Jeffrey Wechsler said, ‘Overall, the artworks presented here embody the modern view of photography as a medium that can equally maintain and transcend its original function.’

Quick Center prepares for the
‘Spirit of Woodstock’

Peter Yarrow, of the legendary Peter, Paul and Mary, Bethany Yarrow, his daughter, and her musical partner Rufus Cappadocia are kicking off the new season at the Quick Center with ‘The Spirit of Woodstock.’
According to a press release, the three will perform a tribute to the Woodstock music of the 1960s. A respective PBS special will open on Sept. 19.

Seventh Anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001

This Thursday marks the seventh anniversary of 9/11, of which the Fairfield community, as well as the rest of the nation, is remembering in many different ways.

Fairfield is enacting a ‘Circle of Remembrance,’ where flags will be planted near the circle by students, staff and faculty on Wednesday and Thursday.
Meanwhile, moments of silence are planned throughout the nation to honor the several fallen planes hijacked by terrorists, which killed thousands of people in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. All the names of the fallen victims are planned to be read.

According to The New York Times, Senators Barack Obama and John McCain, the two presidential nominees, plan on appearing side-by-side on Thursday at Ground Zero.

North Korean leader reportedly ill

According to an article in The New York Times, North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has been seriously sick for the past few weeks and may have suffered a stroke.
Although the article states that the true status of his condition is not completely clear, observers claim he is in poor health, especially after missing recent public apperances.
North Korea is a country whose nuclear weapons has captured the attention of the rest of the world, making the condition of Jong-il intriguing to international government officials.
However, North Korea does not seem to be preparing a search for a new leader, as said in the article.
