PRESS RELEASE

With the changing of the seasons comes more changes for The Mirror.

After another year of new highs, the 30th editorial board has relinquished control of the paper to the new staff. This is the first issue published by the 31st editorial board.

Leading the way is the new editor in chief, Tara E. Lynch ’06, who was managing editor last semester.

“Tara [Lynch] has three solid years of experience with The Mirror, so I’m very confident in her leadership skills,” said Ashleigh B. Egan ’05, former managing editor. “The new staff has a good mix of experienced members and new talent, and I think this mix will only benefit the paper.”

Lynch is optimistic about this year’s staff.

“I’m certain that next year’s paper will match, if not exceed, the level of excellence we’ve established at The Mirror this year,” said Lynch. “The combination of returning talent and new staff will make for a winning combination.”

Joining her at the top of the paper’s masthead is Elizabeth Cooper ’06, formerly a copy editor, and Ryan Blair ’07, previously an assistant editor.

“I feel the editors are especially well-suited for their respective jobs,” said Blair. “With such a talented staff, we’re in for a good year.”

Cooper agreed. “The incoming staff brings a wealth of talent and experience to what promises to be a rewarding year ahead.”

Filling out the staff are News Editor Kelly Sheehan ’06, Campus Life Editor Tara Touloumis ’06, Commentary Editor Cara Muzik ’06, Entertainment Editor Nick Caruso ’06 and Sports Editor Ben Doody ’07.

Supporting the section editors are Copy Editor Caitlin Callaghan ’06, Photography Editor Katie McCarthy ’08, Cartoonist Dan Otfinoski ’06 and Staff Writer Elizabeth Bae ’06. Mark Servidio ’06 returns as advertising manager, as does Bill McBain ’07 as online editor.

For the new year, Coffee Break will be edited by a rotating team of assistant editors, including Patricia McGahan ’06, Christina Stoddard ’08, Ashley Phan ’06, Dan Akeson ’07, Sean Corbett ’07 and Erika Stankard ’08.

Editor in Chief Emeritus Steven M. Andrews is excited about the choices. “I’m very confident in the abilities of the new staff,” Andrews said. “I feel that we laid a lot of groundwork that they’ll be able to exponentially expand and continue.”

Dr. James Simon, advisor to The Mirror, believes the staff is up to the challenge.

“Tara and the new staff face a tall order: trying to replicate, if not surpass, the efforts of this year’s crew,” Simon said. “College newspapers often can go on a rollercoaster ride of some good years, then some bad years. It will be Tara’s challenge to push The Mirror ahead in areas like the online edition while not losing ground for the traditional print edition. Anyone who knows Tara also knows she’s up for the challenge.”

“This new staff has limitless potential,” said Lynch. “This new staff is full of bright student journalists who are truly committed to creating a great newspaper. This year the paper showed an enormous amount of growth, and I’m positive we’ll be able to continue our success into the coming year.”

“I have a lot of confidence in the new staff,” said Egan. “This year was supposed to be a rebuilding year with our staff, and I think we pushed The Mirror to limits we never thought we could reach. If we were able to do all that we did this year, I can only imagine what the new staff will be able to do with The Mirror next year.”
