The American Cancer Society Colleges Against Cancer “is a nationwide collaboration of college students, faculty, and staff dedicated to eliminating cancer by initiating and supporting programs of the American Cancer Society in college communities, according to CACs mission statement.

Fairfield University’s Chapter of Colleges Against Cancer is only one of the 240 plus chapters established. Colleges Against Cancer has four main directions: Advocacy, Cancer Education and Control, Relay for Life, and Survivorship.

Each direction is supported by a committee, headed by a particular chair. The clubs members vary in class, major, and interests, but all share the same strength to support the ACS in finding a cure.

Fairfield University’s Chapter has already been involved in a candle-light vigil celebrating the lives of survivors and those lost to cancer. In addition, the chapter will be co-hosting the 5K Run/Walk this Saturday, October 14 with FUSA, as well as walking in the Westport Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on Sunday, October 15.

Looking to the future, the club will be holding a Relay For Life in April, in which we hope to raise over $15,000 for the ACS by teaming up with Sacred Heart University and the University of Bridgeport.

In order to distinguish our club from the others throughout the nation, we will share Fairfield University’s mission, as well as aid those in dire need of strength and faith.

Club membership is welcome at any point during the school year. For more information, contact the Club’s Secretary, Lauren Peyton, at 09_lpeyton@stagweb.fairfield.edu or myself, the Club President, Megan Steel, at 08_msteel@stagweb.fairfield.edu. Meetings are generally held Tuesday’s at 6:00PM in BNO 106.

Editor’s note: Meghan Steel ’08 is the president and founder of Fairfield’s Colleges Against Cancer.
