The Muslim Student Association will be holding a week-long awareness event about Islam next week.

Although Islam is the second largest religion and has a billion followers, little is known about this major world religion. Often, the general publics’ knowledge about Islam comes from the media and there is usually little interaction with Muslims, leading to even more unjust negativity and controversy.

The MSA was motivated to put this event together not only as a way of standing up and showing pride in their faith, but also to help the University community learn more about this misunderstood religion.

There will be different activities on each day, like a screening of the 2009 documentary New Muslim Cool on Wednesday, April 13.

Also, a session titled “5 Things You Wish You Knew About Islam” will be presented by speaker Haroon Moghul. Moghul is Executive Director of The Madyan Institute, a project attempting to create a better understanding of Islam through respect, harmony and tolerance.

Nargis Alizada, MSA president and a junior at Fairfield University worked alongside members and other supporters to create this event, which has been in the planning process since Spring semester last year.

“I hope everyone attends each one of the events because they were all put together with our fellow Stags in mind,” said Alizada.

The event is being co-sponsored by other student clubs and campus departments, including The Office of Student Diversity, Fairfield United and the Religious Studies Department.
