The University was notified this morning by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that the first two probable cases of swine or H1N1 flu on campus have tested positive, according to an email sent to the student body by Vice President for Administrative and Student Affairs Mark Reed. The University is still waiting to hear on five other probable cases.

“I am pleased to report that both of these students have fully recovered from what was a relatively mild illness,'” Reed said. ‘They have been seen by our medical staff and have been cleared to return to normal activity. The Health Center also reports that presentations for flu-like symptoms have dropped off dramatically since last Tuesday.

Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell said in a press release, ‘This news is not unexpected. Fortunately, these illnesses were relatively mild and did not require hospitalization. We encourage people to take simple precautions to protect themselves and prevent the spread of the flu.

Reed said in his letter that the University will remain open and all activities will continue as planned, including the upcoming’ Senior Week and Commencement.

‘That protocol will remain true should the tests for the remaining five students identified as ‘probable’ also turn out positive,” Reed added. ‘We will continue to monitor this situation closely and keep the University community informed of any changes.

The majority of students on campus have been unfazed by the news and activities have continued as normal during finals week.
