Mother’s Day is this weekend, and although a lot of college students are stressing over finals or drinking like fish this time of year, we should all set some time aside on Sunday to pay tribute to the women who brought us into this world.

Moms are great at all kinds of different things. Most are not-so-great at some things, and awesome at others. Lucky for me, my mom is great at everything, from making the best fettuccine Alfredo you’ll ever eat to listening to any number of my nervous breakdowns over the past four years.

A lot of people love their moms so much because they’re always there to congratulate you when you ace a test or get a fantastic job or perform some other great achievement. While all that is super, my list of such achievements is about as brief as George W. Bush’s actual service in the armed forces was. But despite all my shortcomings and flaws, my mom is still always there for me, and I think that says a lot more. As the great Bob Dylan crooned, some people “just want to be on the side that’s winning.” My mom is always there for me when I’m on the losing side, but hey, she’s also a Red Sox fan, so she has plenty of practice with that.

I couldn’t possibly fit all the ways my mom is great into one article, but I want to mention just one more thing. During my tenure here at Fairfield, I’ve seen so many students who, despite leaving for college, are still pestered by their parents back home, who call nearly every day, check up on their grades, and (in some extreme cases) even come to Fairfield to do their kids’ laundry!

Needless to say, my mom handled my transition to college extremely well. She never called too much, doesn’t bother me about my grades (thank God), and as anyone who’s ever seen my messy closet knows, has never come here to do my laundry. In four years I’ve gone from being an introverted malcontent to…well, I’m still an introverted malcontent, but during that time I’ve learned so many things from so many people at Fairfield that I can’t possibly put a price on the whole experience.

And speaking of prices reminds me of another reason my mom is so awesome. You see, I didn’t exactly go to Fairfield University for free. So thanks Mom, 120,000 times over, you’re the best.
