With the start of a new semester, The Mirror Editorial Board took this opportunity to dream up their ideal vision of the university. Here are some of the recurring themes:

A graduation speaker with gravitas

With graduation fast approaching, it is our hope that Fairfield’s list of impressive commencement speakers will continue to grow. Previous guest speakers include Billy Joel, former president Nixon’s Secretary of State Alexander Haig, former ABC News political commentator Cokie Roberts and Tom Brokaw. We hope that Fairfield’s class of 2006 will enjoy as noteworthy a graduation speaker as those of the past.

Fresh frosh

The dorms are overcrowded, the dining hall is busting at the seams, freshman core courses are hopelessly oversubscribed, and it seems like everyone’s white. Whomever is ultimately to blame for the admissions gaffe that yielded the most bloated, homogenous, and least-credentialed freshman class in recent history, it is our wish that they make the class of 2010 the best the school has ever seen.

A lively FUSA election

We’re hoping that this year’s FUSA election will draw out the best talent Fairfield has to offer. We want the level of debate on student issues to rise during this election season, with thoughtful, ambitious candidates striving to reverse the troubling recent trend of low voter turnouts. Intelligent, open-minded candidates must rise to the occasion, giving the student body a tough rather than obvious choice in instilling the best leadership for FUSA.

A spring concert to remember

With all due respect to the musical talent of recent acts such as Guster and The Roots, we’re really hoping for a Spring concert that will knock our socks off in the coming year. We hope that the FUSA programming board will explore as many options as possible, and not rule out an incredible act simply because we all might have to pay a few extra bucks.
