Spam Jam this year happened in and around my townhouse. In fact, there were hoses and maintenance workers streaming in and out throughout the day-more so than usual.

The day’s festivities featured a performance by White Noise and food in plentiful quantities. But most importantly, there were kegs. Sunny days and alcohol bring the crowds.

Events like Spam Jam are an ideal way for college students to relax and have fun, but to do so with a “safety net” of security officers and resident assistance. Furthermore, having administrators – or maybe even a few faculty members – man the kegs can be a great PR move.

We all read quotes from administrators in The Mirror, but wouldn’t it be nice for students to meet an administrator not in an office but on the student’s home turf: the keg line? Both students and administrators would benefit from a chat in a casual setting.

There is another benefit to having large events on campus. For every student imbibing on a Saturday in a Spam Jam type of event, there will be one less student at the Point. Let’s be completely honest, most people who spent Spam Jam Saturday in the sun, drinking beers and eating Sodexho, did not have the energy to raise much of a ruckus Saturday night.

If they wanted something to do, there was the Black 47 show in the Quad. The attendance at this free concert was astounding. Just like Spam Jam, well-attended concerts in the Quad keep students on campus and keep townspeople happy.

For students, if we give a little we will get something in return. If we accept the limitations imposed during Spam Jam we will enjoy a great party. If we have more parties and concerts on-campus, we will keep the townspeople happy and still be able to enjoy an occasional beach party.

In my first month at Fairfield, I attended the Luau and had a great time. A party of that size is wonderful, but we will likely not see it again. Unfortunately. As my last week at Fairfield begins, in spite of the loss of Clam Jam and Luau, the four years at this university are still an opportunity to have a lot of fun-and maybe learn something every once in a while.
