The Best: Firehouse Deli

This is the closest thing to a New York deli in Connecticut, and in most cases, it exceeds the high standards set by city sandwich lovers. Voted the number one deli in Connecticut and Zagat rated, Firehouse aims to please. Try one of their specials, like the New Yorker, roast beef, melted mozzarella, Russian dressing, lettuce and tomato, or make your own unique combo. In addition to the standard deli sandwich fare, an extensive salad bar and deli salads like tortellini and potato are detectible. Try some of their baked goods as well – the Blondie is delicious. Although a little pricey, Firehouse is definitely worth every penny spent on a meal. Expect a slight line on the weekends and especially on Parent’s Weekend.

The Worst: The Stag

Too much meat. Stale bread. Dead lettuce. Sounds appetizing, right? While the Stag does serve Boar’s Head meat, it hasn’t been refrigerated for so long that it tastes like it has gone bad. While there is a relatively good selection of cold cuts and toppings, the sandwiches usually leave much to be desired. The workers wear the same glove for each sandwich, so your BLT could end up tasting like an onion and pickle wrap. There are many complaints, but if you want a sandwich, just walk the mile into town to Firehouse.
