On behalf of the University community, we extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family and friends of sophomore Kristen Duhamel, who passed away early Saturday morning.

Considered by friends a personable, selfless young woman, Kristen exemplified many qualities a Jesuit university looks for in its students.

Kristen was a nursing major and participated in the emergency rescue program on campus, which is only a small part of how she lived to help others. Those around her spoke highly of her constant caring, compassionate nature.

She attended various service trips and retreats both in her town of Charlestown, R.I. and on campus. She was also a valued member of Fairfield’s Campus Ministry. Family and friends remember Kristen by her ability to improve the moods of those around her, not to mention her knack for imparting a sense of strength and hope.

Two years ago, the University mourned the loss of a sophomore student, Alex Carrion. The abrupt deaths of such young and valued members of our University community remind us of just how fragile life is.

It is so easy for us college students to get wrapped up in our busy lives of studying and socializing; we often forget to stop and reflect on the lives we are living. However, these tragic moments act as wake-up calls.

It is in these situations that we are also reminded of the strength and closeness of our Jesuit university community. These are the moments when classmates and faculty alike band together, as illustrated at the memorial service in the Egan Chapel on Saturday. More than 400 students and friends crammed into the chapel, showing that each member of the Fairfield community is highly valued. Regardless of whether all students knew her personally, Kristen’s passing will be felt by all.

Nineteen is just too short of a life to leave. Together, we will remember and continue to celebrate her wonderful life and various achievements.

This life cannot be taken for granted, and we must value each day we are given. As college students, we have many opportunities ahead of us. If we are proactive in our lives, the way Kristen was, we will have put our education to good use and our passions toward greater goals.
