The women’s tennis team finally broke a six-game losing streak with a victory over Rider on Friday. Despite losing to Loyola Maryland on Saturday, Fairfield is looking forward to its first round matchup against Siena in the MAAC Championships on April 20.

The season began well for the Stags, with a 7-3 record through March 25. They then lost to Connecticut on March 29. Fairfield lost its next five games, all but one in MAAC conference play.

The Stags finished the season with a 8-11 record overall and were 2-5 in the MAAC, giving them the seventh seed in the MAAC Championships.

Injuries set Fairfield back right from the beginning of the year, as Michaela Cerrone ’10 and Marisa Voloshin ’09 each were sidelined during winter practices. Cerrone returned this past weekend, but is still not 100 percent.

Fairfield also lost freshman Dana Postupack, a key singles and doubles player, for a good portion of the season because of an injured ankle. Postupack also returned this weekend, but is also not 100 percent.

“Neither are 100 percent and they are showing a lot of courage by making a tremendous effort,” said Head Coach Ed Paige.

The Stags picked up a key victory over Rider on Friday, 6-1. The win moved the Stags out of a tie for ninth place in the MAAC. Postupack battled through her injury to win at two singles after fellow freshman Paulina Rys fell in a close 6-4, 6-3 match at first singles.

Rys and Postupack returned to doubles competition and picked up a victory at one doubles, with a 8-6 win.

“Dana and Paulina are key to our success at the first doubles spot,” said Paige.

The Stags then fell 6-1 to Loyola on Saturday, with Rys and Postupack the only victorious players on the day Rys was a double winner, picking up a victoy at number one singles and also at doubles with Postupack.

Fairfield will face Siena, who they lost to 6-1 on April 1. Both Cerrone and Postupack were not in the lineup for the Stags during that match.

“The first time we played Siena, we didn’t have Dana or Michaela,” said Paige.”Siena is favored, but we can win. Preparation will be a key.”
