The Stags women’s soccer team entered a key matchup Sunday with first place Loyola, coming off of a three game winning streak and putting them in second place in the MAAC.

Fairfield, which entered the game with a 6-4-1 (3-1) record, lost a close one to Loyola, 1-0.

Loyola dominated Fairfield in the shot category and limited the Stags to just two shots. Loyola’s lone goal came nine minutes into the second half with a header from the middle of the box.

Fairfield count not break Loyola’s defense and had trouble getting shots off all game. The Stags’ defense dominated and allowed only one goal.

Alex Caram ’08 had the best scoring opportunity for Fairfield on a free kick. The shot was on goal, but was saved.

The Stags beat Rider 2-0 to split the weekend’s games. Amanda Vargo ’08 and Laura Mrowka ’07 had the goals in the shutout victory.

Brett Maron ’08 had nine saves in the game and has six shutouts this season.

Fairfield’s defense in all of its wins has been tremendous. All of Fairfield’s wins have come by way of shutouts.

Four games remain on the schedule before the MAAC tournament. The fact that the Stags played Loyola so closely bodes well for them as they head down the stretch, as the quality of competition is certain to not be as stiff.
