Stag Athlete of the Week

ATHLETE: Katie Mann ’10 SPORT: Volleyball ACHIEVEMENT: Was named MAAC Rookie of the Week after an impressive weekend in the Stags’ victories over Canisius, 3-0, and Niagara, 3-0. Mann averaged 4.50 kills, 1.67 digs, and 1.33 blocks per game. She also did not commit an error in 44 attempts and achieved .614 attack percentage over the week. It was her second Rookie of the Week award of the season.

I’m a balla: The men’s and women’s tennis teams participated in the ITA Northeast Regional Championships this weekend, with the men at University of Pennyslvania and the women at Dartmouth. The teams competed against the top singles and top double players from the best schools in the Northeast. Fairfield’s Jon Fernando `07 and Chip Palumbo `09 fell in the first round of doubles, 8-3, while Fernando lost his singles match 7-6, 7-5. On the women’s side, freshman Paulina Rys won the first ITA match by a Stag since 1999. Rys and doubles partner Marisa Voloshin lost in the first round of doubles. Rys fell in the second round of singles. ~ TOM CLEARY

S.O.S.: The women’s crew team finished 45th out of 46 teams at the Head of the Charles Regatta, one of the biggest rowing events in the world. The Stags’ finished with a time of 19:24 before penalties and 19:54 after penalties in the Championship Eight race. The U.S. National Team finished in first place with a time of 15:36 and the Canadian National Team finished in second place with a time of 15:54. The team is undersized compared to the other teams in the event and consists of all sophomores. The Stags’ time was affected by being forced to avoid a bridge, in order to save the boat and protect themselves. ~ TOM CLEARY

To the hole: The women’s basketball team was selected fifth by the MAAC coaches in the preseason poll, while the men’s team was selected ninth. The poll was released at the annual media day at Madison Square Garden. Two women’s players were named to the preseason All-MAAC teams: Sabra Wrice ’08 and Baendu Lowenthal ’08. ~ TOM CLEARY
