Men’s tennis takes share of ECAC Championships: Three seasons in a row, three straight ECAC Open Championships for the men’s tennis team. This past Sunday, sophomore Ryan Berthod led the Stags to yet another championship – although the end result was a tie with the University of Delaware. Berthod claimed his second consecutive gold medal in the ECAC Open with a win in the singles bracket after a three-set victory over Colgate’s Phil Barnesek in the final round. Doubles team Balazs Szikla ’08 and Glen Gannon captured the gold as well to aide in the title. -Keith Connors

Field hockey drops to 1-8: The Stags could not build off of a strong outing against No. 3 Iowa last weekend and dropped their two games this weekend to Monmouth and Yale, falling to 1-8 on the season. Fairfield lost to Monmouth 2-1 at University Field in Fairfield with Brittany Bates ’09 scoring its lone goal. The Stags struggled from the start against Yale on Sunday in New Haven, losing 7-0. Liz Thomas ’08 had 18 saves, but also allowed seven goals. Fairfield failed to record a shot in the first half and were out-shot 34-5 for the game. -Tom Cleary

Joelle Nawrocki headlines recuiting class: The women’s basketball team’s recruiting class this season is led by Joelle Nawrocki, from Farmington, Conn. Nawrocki is the first recruit signed by Head Coach Joe Frager. The 5’11 guard was a McDonald’s All-American nominee and a member of the Hartford Courant All-State team. She joins Mesha Joseph, from Brooklyn, N.Y., Ayriell Robinson, from Spring, Texas, and Niya Santiago, from South Plainfield, N.J., who were all signed by Nolan. -Tom Cleary

Women’s golf finishes sixth at tournament: While it was not a good weekend against the competition in the Mt. Holyoke Invitational (they finished sixth overall), the team made certain strides individually and as a group. Overall as a group, the team shot a two-day score of 680 on the par-72, and improved by two strokes from their Saturday score. Individually, they also began to make strides. The top scorer for Fairfield was freshman Kristen MacDonald, who finished in a tie for eighth place. -Keith Connors

Male athlete of the week ATHLETE: Ryan Berthod ’10 SPORT: Men’s tennis ACHIEVEMENT: Berthod won his secondstraight gold medal at the ECAC Open Championships this past weekend. Berthod won the Flight Three final over Colgate’s Phil Barnesek, 6-2, 1-6, 7-5. Fairfield finished first for the third straight season. Last year, in his first year as a member of the Stags, Berthod also took home the gold medal.

Female athlete of the week

ATHLETE: Brett Maron ’08 SPORT: Women’s soccer ACHIEVEMENT: Maron allowed two goals to No. 9 Boston College on Sept. 19 but also recorded 13 saves, one away from the school record, which she tied earlier this season. Against Providence, Maron picked up her third shutout of the season and recorded two saves.
