Cross country performs well at Leeber Invitational:

The Fairfield cross country teams race only once on campus and had a successful outing in that one race, the Victor Leeber S.J. Invitational on Saturday. The men’s team finished fifth, while the women’s team placed sixth out of seven teams. Sacred Heart swept both races for the second straight year. Ben Heslin ’11 finished first for Fairfield and 25th overall with a time of 29:23.50. Fellow freshman Annie Rooney was the top-finisher on the women’s side with a time of 22:21.35 for a 36th overall finish. Junior Devann Ard finished slightly behind her with a time of 22:34.68

Women’s basketball announces schedule: “We are very excited about the coming season,” said Head Coach Joe Frager in a press release. “We have a nice balance of teams on the schedule that will help us achieve our goal of playing our best basketball down the stretch.” The team’s schedule is headlined by games against Sacred Heart and Boston College at the Arena at Harbor Yard and at Villanova. Fairfield will also play in two tournaments, the Cal-Poly Thanksgiving Tournament and the Fordham Tournament.

Field hockey splits weekend games: The Stags moved to 2-9 on the season with a win against St. Francis, Pa., and a loss to Lock Haven over the weekend. Against St. Francis the Stags won 3-2, with Molly Byrnes ’09 scoring two goals, her first two of the season. Sophomore Carly McCullough added a goal for the Stags, while goalkeeper Liz Thomas ’08 had 10 saves. Lock Haven defeated Fairfield 4-1 with junior Amy Hosking scoring Fairfield’s lone goal. Fairfield managed only two shots, to Lock Haven’s 19. The Stags return home for their second ever America East game against Boston University on Oct. 5.

Women’s tennis successful at Hofstra Invitational:

Sophomores Dana Postupack and Paulina Rys earned a 8-4 victory over Radford’s No. 1 doubles team, while fellow sophomores Michaela Cerrone and Gretchen Amberg picked up a 8-4 win over Radford’s No. 3 doubles team. The Stags faced off against Amherst in singles competition but failed to win any of the matches. The Stags return to action Oct. 13-14 by co-hosting a tournament with Sacred Heart in Fairfield.

SPORT: Men’s crew

ACHIEVEMENT: The men’s crew team participated in its first race as a Division I varisty team. Matthew Greninger ’10 and Ross Daveni ’08 were the top finishers for Fairfield, finishing eighth and ninth in the Men’s College 4+.

Female athlete of the week

ATHLETE: Janna Breitenwischer ’08

SPORT: Women’s soccer

ACHIEVEMENT: Breitenwischer scored a goal and added two assists in Fairfield’s 6-0 win over Wagner College. Breitenwischer previously had one assist on the season and now has five points, tying her for third on the team in that category.
