FUSA President Hutch Williams campaigned for increased Stag pride and he has delivered. With the “Fear of the Deer” mantra popular among the freshman class and what is shaping up to be a successful return of men’s and women’s basketball to Alumni Hall, school spirit has certainly grown in the past few months.

Record numbers of fans have attended pre-game bonfires and cheered the men’s soccer team all the way to its first MAAC championship in eight years.

“Stags Unleashed” week, a series of events sponsored by FUSA, is attracting large crowds. On Tuesday night, for example, the lower level of the BCC was packed with students enjoying a singing contest, the winner of which will sing the national anthem before Friday’s men’s basketball game against American.

Other scheduled events included a pep rally on Wednesday night, and a Midnight Mayhem event on Thursday night, featuring a game of knockout in the BCC lobby.

More evidence of this changing tide of the Red Sea lies in the fact that the student tickets for Friday’s game were sold out within two days – something that would have been unheard of several years ago. We hope that this will inspire more fans to make the trip to the Arena at Harbor Yard so that our teams can fully utilize this professional-quality court.

While freshmen think this type of Stag-obsessed behavior is normal, upperclassmen are disoriented by this conduct.

For most upperclassman, going to sporting events and dressing in school colors is something for high school.

Williams and Stags in the Stands are changing the way students look at school spirit, and we commend them for inspiring that change.

This new-found school spirit, combined with an energetic and highly touted new men’s basketball coach, could help put Fairfield on the athletic map.
