The women’s lacrosse team made a short trip down I-95 to begin its 2008 campaign and nearly knocked off the 13th ranked team in the nation in the process.

But a Yale goal with 1:30 left in the game broke an 8-8 tie to end Fairfield’s upset hopes.

The Stags were constantly forced to answer goals from the Bulldogs from the first minute of the game on. Yale struck first with a goal 61 seconds into the contest, but Fairfield answered back with two goals of its own, both by Maryland native Kristen Coleman, a freshman midfielder who was making her debut with the Stags.

Coleman would add her third goal towards the end of the half and the Stags went into the break ahead, 4-3.

Yale almost put the game way early in the half by scoring four goals in a five minute, 49 second span in the third quarter. But Fairfield would not back down that easily.

The Stags struck back with goals from Kelly Barnes ’10 and Rebecca White ’09 to cut the deficit to 7-6. Yale pulled back up by two with another goal, but Erin Rigby ’10 cut the deficit back to one with 15:15 left in the game.

Junior Abbey Goodwin tied the game with 13:10 left and the two teams remained scoreless until Yale’s Lauren Taylor put the Bulldogs back on top with 1:30 remaining in the game.

Fairfield held in advantage in draws controlled, with 12 of 19 and also had a better scoring percentage, converting eight of its 15 shots into goals. Yale scored nine times on 22 shots.

Lauren Chatnik ’08 had three saves while playing the entire contest in goal.

The Stags return to action on Friday at 3 p.m. as they travel to Sacred Heart for a cross-town rivalry match-up.
