The women’s lacrosse team found itself down again this past week as it lost 20-10 to Columbia last Wednesday.

The loss brought the Stags to 5-7 overall while the Lions improved to 4-6 on the season.

The Stags got off to a strong start, putting the Lions on their heels from the beginning. Fairfield took a 4-3 lead in the first minutes of play.

“At the beginning we played well and were definitely the better team,” said Amy Neville ’08.

But the lead was not good enough to keep Fairfield going strong as the Lions went on to net six unanswered goals to bring their lead to 9-4.

Abbey Goodwin ’09 was finally able to stop the streak in the last two minutes of the half. Columbia answered with one more goal in the last 20 seconds to take the half-time lead, 10-5.

“I think sometimes we fall into a lull, especially if the other team gets a couple of goals and we get down on ourselves,” said Ashley Chappell ’07. “Also there are things you can’t prepare for because you never know when the other team is going to step it up.”

The second half started with both teams trading back-to-back goals. Fairfield was unable to hold on, though. The Lions went on another 6-0 run to take the game away.

“We just slipped up end of first half, the beginning of the second half and then you can’t play catch up with that big of a hole,” Neville said.

Fairfield was able to slip in a couple more goals before the end of the game, but it was not enough.

“There were a lot of lapses in defense,” said Head Coach Stacey McCue. She went on to say that not playing team defense, initial one-on-one defense and helping to fill in the holes were the biggest problems.

However, the break from non-league games helps the players to prepare and get ready for the final stretch of MAAC games ahead, she said.

“It’s hard to get out of the MAAC and then back in, but it is fun playing different teams,” said Chappell.

But in order to perform in their last four MAAC games, the Stags are going to have to step up to remain a contender for the MAAC tournament.

“We’re starting to get [mentally] tired,” said Chappell. “But I know that everyone wants to win so bad.”
