“No one quite in the dancing mood yet?” asks JonnieProud singer Mike Falzone on their latest album. “You will be!” he assures.

“Live from Stagstock,” the latest release from local band JonnieProud, is a collection of live songs compiled from the band’s latest appearance at this year’s cleverly titled event, Stagstock. With a new spin on their comfortable acoustic sound, JonnieProud took the stage to perform a set that lasted over 30 minutes and was later released as their second album.

When asked to describe their eclectic style, JonnieProud members refer to themselves as jam rock; however, listeners can expect much more. “Live from Stagstock” features elements and influences from many different music genres including rock, jazz, blues and even hip-hop.

My favorite is the last track, “Take the Hill.” With a steady rock vibe and a smooth sax line by Steve Sennett, Falzone sings about overcoming first impressions.

“Put out your front line and watch me take the hill without hesitation,” sings Falzone confidently. Arguably the catchiest song on the record, I found myself singing the chorus in my head over and over again. “Lay down your first impression of me. I’ll exceed your expectation.”

On “Flexible Shank Grape Jam,” Chris Pastore lays down a melodic bass beat while Falzone raps in a fashion similar to former Rage Against the Machine singer Zack De La Rocha. The heaviest song on the CD, “Grape Jam,” shows JonnieProud at their highest potential, a perfect leading song not only for “Live from Stagstock” but also for any actual live show.

For those Ben Harper and Dave Matthews fans who enjoy a slower pace and lighter mood, “Live from Stagstock” can still satisfy. Tracks three and four, “Goldmine” and “Katy,” both display the softer sounds that most jam rockers tend to dabble in. In “Katy,” Sennett’s sax shines once again, adding a much more complex sound into JonnieProud’s mix.

“Live from Stagstock” may only have five tracks, but there is something for everyone on this diverse record. Two songs clock in at approximately eight minutes, while another is timed at just over seven, giving the CD an average length and classifying it safely in the LP category.
