Feel like Christmas is already here?

Well if you stepped into any store recently, it is no wonder. Every store is decked out with Christmas decorations with Christmas carols ringing in the background.

The day after Halloween, it seemed that Christmas had already arrived.

Could there be a reason that ‘Christmas in July’ is about to become a reality?

Large corporations want to get their Christmas products out there early. They want people to be thinking about Christmas shopping. They want to get them in the fever.

However, the day after Halloween, people are not ready to jump straight into the Christmas spirit.

Whatever happened to the day after Thanksgiving being the big day to start your Christmas shopping? Black Friday, as it has become known, has been the unofficial start of the holiday season.

At the rate we are going, Black Friday will be the day after Halloween, a full month earlier than it is now.

People are now expected to get into the Christmas spirit before all the leaves are off the trees. This year people were even in skirts and T-shirts the week after Halloween.

Many stores want’ people to start spending all of their Christmas money earlier to benefit their profits. Many stores have even had sales already promoting their winter items.

‘ American Eagle has already had a deal that persuaded people to buy one sweater and receive a 50 percent discount on the second sweater if they so choose.

They are not the only one; many stores are preaching these kinds of deals.

It is ridiculous, people should not be out buying Christmas gifts before Thanksgiving.

Christmas should not even be in the thoughts of people so early!

It is making Christmas more and more into a superficial, material holiday.

If we get down to its roots, Christmas is about the gathering of family to celebrate an event that influenced their lives.

Now it is being turned into a commercial holiday, a time of the year to buy and receive gifts.

‘Christmas should not be advertised until at least after Thanksgiving,’ said Loral DeSalvio ’11.

She also said ‘it is a little overboard that radio stations have already started with the Christmas carols.’

She is not the only one who thinks it is absurd to think about Christmas weeks before Black Friday.

‘Christmas is barely a concern of mine right after Thanksgiving, much less way before it.,’ said Nicole Cavallaro ’11.

They are right; it is even surprising that an article about Christmas is even out in the paper already.

Could it be that people feel that if they do not start shopping now that everything will be sold out when it should actually be a concern?

Perhaps, but one thing is for certain. Something needs to be done before we are shopping for Christmas while we are still soaking up the sun during the summer vacation months.
