Unless you’ve been living under a rock these last couple of years, everyone on this campus should be aware of the Guitar Hero video game franchise craze.

Possibly the most addictive video game ever created, the third installment in the Guitar Hero series was released this week on Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3 and Playstation 2. The game has been given a nine out of 10 by Game Informer Magazine.

The game features over 50 songs by popular bands, such as Metallica, Poison, Kiss, Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine, The Strokes, The Killers, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer, Aerosmith, Bloc Party, Santana, Smashing Pumpkins and Muse. Some players have complained that there is not enough diversity in the selection, missing artists including Jimi Hendrix and Prince.

One thing players of the previous game will notice right away is how much more modern the song selection has become.

While Guitar Hero 2 was predominantly 80 hair metal songs and classic rock, this newest installment to the series features several more-mainstream rock tracks, with bands including Senses Fail and Matchbook Romance.

Gamers familiar with the previous Guitar Hero games will notice several new features to the game, including an all-new black wireless guitar controller. The game itself has a number of new game play modes, including co-op career mode, online game play, and one-on-one boss battles with guitar legends such as Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine and Slash from Guns and Roses.

With a whole slew of new songs to play and several new features, Guitar Hero 3 is definitely a game worth picking up. Keep it in mind while you shop for gifts this holiday season. Halo 3 is for geeks anyway.

Watch out for the Guitar Hero bundles at Wal-Mart and Target. The bundle may look the same as the regular game, but some come with the old Guitar Hero 2 X-Plorer guitar rather than the new X-Plorer guitar.
