Best? La Salsa: 580 Post Road, Fairfield • 256-8800

If you want to get the bowels moving in a natural way, there’s always Mexican. And if you’re going Mexican, don’t be persuaded by gaudy happy hour specials. There is no substitute for fresh taquitos, chicken quesadillas and nachos grade, which is why La Salsa is the best Mexican in town. Though it seems no bigger than a shoe box, this very un-restaurant-like place, with its small tables and plastic trays, is reminiscent of fast food. After getting all of your condiments, green and red salsas and guacamole, you realize that this is not the fast food it originally appeared to be. Personally, I am part of the school that puts hot sauce on all Mexican. I don’t really know what the food tastes like otherwise, and I certainly do not look forward to the bathroom trip afterward. Even so, get your Tums ready, heap on the all of the flavor you want and just hold onto your seat. It may be a trip to the bathroom or a trip to utter Mexican satisfaction. Either way, you’re going with a full stomach and the flatulency of a 70-year-old man.

Worst? Taco Loco: 3170 Fairfield Ave., Bridgeport • 335-8228

Let’s clear up a few misconceptions right off the bat: half-priced margaritas are not really half-priced, and even though the food comes on an actual plate, that is not a testament to its overall quality. The Coronas are a decent touch, but drunkenness is necessary when you’re going to Taco Loco. You do not need to do that at La Salsa. Don’t get me wrong, the food isn’t as bad as the Barone Campus Center cafeteria, but it certainly is not quality either. The stomach cramps from Taco Loco are also discomforting enough to warrant a trip to the facilities midway through dinner. Certainly, the setting is more intimate than hanging on the corner of Post Road. But if you want good Mexican and not some Bridgeport knockoff, go to La Salsa and get some quality steak quesadillas.
