It is 80 degrees outside and a beautiful fall Friday afternoon. Everyone is done with classes and The Stag is the place to be. Well inside at least. Most students this year are not pleased with the weathered furniture outside the Stag.

Regardless of their condition, some students brave the outside patio to have their sandwiches and other snacks in the remaining warm summer sun. Most of the others, however, are disgusted by the apparent lack of upkeep of the tables and choose to sit inside.

Amanda Allen, ’04 thinks that more students would take advantage of the outdoor seating if the tables were nice. “Why would people want to sit out there?” Allen asked. “It totally detracts from the atmosphere that there would be if there were nice tables to sit at.”

Terese Carlozzi, ’04, after eating there with her friends one day said, “I felt uncomfortable putting my food on the table.” Carlozzi said she was offended by the condition of the tables, and thought the school was being “cheap.”

“They did not want to invest the money on good outside tables,” Carlozzi said. “The ones outside are the same as the inside tables.”

Jim Fitzpatrick, head of student services, said “The tables are meant to be outside and are still under warranty.”

He agreed with the complaints of students and was all ready well aware of the condition of the tables saying that they “look like they have been out there for ten years.”

The matter of the tables was discussed with Raphael Depala, manager of the Stag. He replied thathe Sodexo staff does their best to keep the tables clean, but for the most part, the university takes care of the tables.

The condition of the tables may have deterred some students from eating outside and enjoying the weather this semester, but Jim Fitzpatrick has been talking with the company to get something done by the time the weather warms up again.
