Over the years, the name Britney Spears has been linked to so much, starting with her reign as America’s pop princess.

She lost the mouse ears of the Mickey Mouse Club and developed an hour-glass figure that would drive any redneck to drink. She then found that drunken southern man and he got her pregnant. Twice, actually.

Spears doesn’t make it into the tabloids – she is the tabloids. If she grows another percentage of body fat, US Weekly puts her flab on the front cover.

But what people tend to forget is that interest rates are at 2.25 percent and over 4,000 U.S. soldiers have fallen dead upon the Iraqi soil. So, why would we care about Britney?

About a month ago South Park ran an episode about how the media continues to follow Britney regardless of what she does.

Why do we care so much? If her life is swirling down a porcelain toilet why should we care?

Where did Britney go wrong? Well, behind every great woman there is a completely useless man. It’s the Eva Longoria syndrome.

She was the thing that got teenage boys through puberty until she found a back-up dancer who never really made it through that stage, himself. K-Fed ruined Britney for the rest of us.

And you know what … she’s still the hottest thing in pop culture.

She has sold 83 million copies of her albums, making her the eighth best-selling female singer ever.

If she is washed up, why are magazines still flying off the New York City grease trucks and airport duty-free shops?

She is one very interesting, complicated southern girl.

The problem may be that Americans just love to hate. Britney is on top of her game now more than ever.

In 2007, a Rolling Stone article said, “‘Blackout’ is the first time in [Spears’] career that she’s voiced any real thoughts about her life. The old provocation game is still afoot, but Britney’s stubbornly holding on to her freakness – it’s the only form of rebellion she’s got left.”

In 2008, she released a song titled “Piece of Me,” in which she called out her critics.

The critics didn’t have much to say as the song found its way to the top of the charts.

Bottom line: Britney is back and, if you want a piece of her, you better realize she is not on the way to retirement.

She started her career with the line, “Hit me baby one more time.” She has now added to the end of that, “I dare you.”
