What do I want to be when I grow up? We’ve been asked this our whole lives, but never had to worry about it until recently. That at least goes for seniors; underclassmen, enjoy being able to dodge this question while it lasts.

In high school, my guidance counselor asked me what I wanted to be in 10 years. I told him I wanted to be a sheep herder. He looked surprised for a minute, but then began listing colleges where I might be able to get my sheep herding career off the ground. I finally told him I was kidding, and then ran out of his office laughing and yelling behind me that I would never grow up and would be a kid forever! (Yes, some exaggerations have been made for entertainment value)

Well, Peter Pan, college is almost up. I like to tell myself that I’m not the only one who doesn’t have their act together. Let’s find out- a random Monday evening and you’ve found yourself without much work to do. Do you:

A) Take this time to polish up your resume; you’ll be in the real world soon.

B) Research companies you may potentially want to work for.

C) Watch a “Parental Control” marathon and write an outline of what your Real World audition tape will be like.

If you chose C, congratulations, you and I will probably be living together in a van down by the river after graduation, talking about the glory days.

I can’t tell you what I want to be when I grow up because I can’t think about growing up right now. I’m sure that some of you will bump into me a few years down the road and I’ll have one of those mom haircuts and tapered jeans that come up to my waist, working in a little cubicle somewhere. Right now, I think we need to focus on our very precious last moments at Fairfield U.

And to all the Susie Go Getters out there that know what they want to be when they grow up, I ask you to please have mercy on me in five years when you’re interviewing me for a job for which I’ll probably be seriously under-qualified. Thanks in advance.
