Fifty-three students elected into prestigious honor society

Fairfield recently announced this year’s Phi Beta Kappa inductees, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society. The students – nine juniors and 44 seniors – must rank in the top 10 percent of their class, have a major within the liberal arts and sciences, and prove to be leaders in their fields in order to be considered for membership. According to a University press release, the students were chosen from 500 nominations of 170 students, recommended by 110 faculty members. The induction ceremony will take place on April 15.

Paterson sworn in as NY governor

Lt. Gov. David Paterson was sworn in Monday as the new governor of New York. He assumed the position after Eliot Spitzer stepped down last week after being caught in a prostitution scandal. The 55th governor of New York, Paterson became the state’s first black and first legally blind governor. In his 30-minute inaugural speech, Paterson said, “What we are going to do from now on is what we always should have done: We are going to work together. “With conviction in our brains and compassion in our hearts and the love for New York on our sleeves, we will dedicate ourselves to principle but always maintain the ability to listen.”

Tornadoes hit Atlanta

The commercial center of downtown Atlanta, home to many city landmarks, was ravaged by tornadoes over the weekend. Capt. Bill May of the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department told the New York Times that 27 people were injured and taken to hospitals, though no fatalities were known. High-rise buildings and loft complexes, along with the CNN Center, the Georgia Dome and the convention center, were said to be damaged by the twisters. Several events throughout the city were disrupted on Saturday because of the tornadoes – the St. Patrick’s Day Parade was cancelled and the college basketball playoffs needed to be moved to a smaller stadium. Northwest Georgia was was hit hard on Saturday by tornadoes; two people were killed.
