Representatives from the University met with police organizations from Bridgeport, Fairfield, Trumbull and Stratford, to talk about the growth of underage college students purchasing alcohol. A representative from the Connecticut Liquor Commission and a representative from the Governor’s office were also present.

Fairfield University’s representative was Public Safety Officer Mike Santos.

“It is clear that the Bridgeport Police Department and surrounding Police Departments are now taking a more active role in addressing the purchasing of alcohol by underage individuals,” said Santos, who state that alcohol violations have remained consistent over the past few years.

Santos said that the school’s policy regard underage alcohol will remain unchanged as the handbook clearly state that the University follows the laws of Connecticut.

Santos attended the meeting because it was during his shift and was accompanied by an administrator of the Public Safety department. The meeting was also attended by “154 owners and operators from 114 [liquor] stores” according to the article.

“Our presense … was to show a unified effort by law enforcement to combat underage drinking,” he said.

The Neighborhood Enforcement Team, which is comprised of the four police departments, is lead by Sgt. Paul Grech.

Grech said if an underage child is stopped in the surrounding towns with liquor and the alcohol is found to have been purchased in Bridgeport, the city liquor store will be held responsible, according the Bridgeport News.
